Andern Education Research, Inc. is a leading nonprofit public benefit organization of its kind. The mission of AER is to develop, promote, support, and provide educational opportunities to students of color and families who live in low income and underserved areas of the community. AER intends to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leader-ship in American society. AER seeks to carry out its mission through its four Initiatives: Incubator, GEMs, SMILE, and Wellness.
MISSION
For more information please visit our website at: www.andern-educational-research.org
The Incubator Initiative provides assistance to charter schools that are seeking to increase the level of educational services for students who are underserved, unprivileged, and delinquent or at risk. The program offers various services to schools involved within the program, including but not limited to establishing charter petitions, locating facilities, increasing enrollment, providing professional development, and back office support. AER works with charter middle schools grades 5th through 8th to improve student performance and test scores. In addition to supporting charter schools that are already operating, AER also offers support to highly motivated educators with strong passion and determination to open new charter schools in the area.
A Highschool Placement Program
As AER accomplishes its mission of strengthening and raising the level of educational service provided to students in middle charter schools, AER will simultaneously identify students who have demonstrated exceptional high academic achievement in an effort to provide placement in one of the program’s private high schools. AER has partnered with 13 local private high schools to welcome these gifted students into their communities. Not only will we assist with placement into these high schools, GEMs is committed to supporting these students all through high school and college. We will also provide up to $20,000 in scholarship funding per student placed in our partner high schools.
A Mentoring Entrepernuer Program
S.M.I.L.E. is a male-to-male mentoring entrepreneurial program addressing many of the social issues that plague African American and Latino American adolescents. Through this program, we hope to develop strong mentors to help mentor our males on life skills, drug and gang violence, teenage pregnancy, the importance of family and community, career training, GED services, job placement, and more. AER will accomplish this goal by helping to establish 5 new non-profit organizations per year that will service at least 100-200 young boys of color particularly youths who are troubled and/or have had a brush with the juvenile system.
AER has introduced its Wellness Program to bring awareness to the community regarding strengthening the “WHOLE” mind, body and soul. The program educates students and the communities serviced on proper nutrition, health, and fitness in an effort to decrease the number of minorities acquiring death causing diseases that are controllable and preventable, including diabetes, high blood pressure high cholesterol, strokes, and heart attacks. As a way to reduce these health concerns, the Wellness Program provides no-cost physical fitness and education to the students and their families.
